High Blood Pressure Medicine - Side Effects

High blood pressure has become one of the most common heart diseases nowadays.

Many people may think that with medicine prescribed for high blood pressure, it means they are safe and the problems solved. However do you know that side effects of these medications bring harm to your health in the long run?

Have you heard of people end up going for kidney dialysis (kidney failure) after medicine intake for many many years?

What are common high blood pressure side effects?

Different classes of blood pressure medications have different side effects.

Diuretics

Diuretics can lead to an increase in potassium loss, known as hypokalemia, which, in turn can affect muscular function -- including the muscles of the heart. There is also an increased risk for gout with diuretics -- as well as the possibility of weakness, thirst, dehydration, and increased urination. Changes in blood sugar levels are also possible. Skin reactions, some severe, are possible with thiazide diuretics (such as hydrochlorothiazide). Potassium-sparing diuretics, such as spironolactone (Aldactone) may cause breast enlargement in males.

Beta blockers

Beta-blockers cause the heart to slow down and so some of their side effects can be traced to that mechanism of action. Dizziness, weakness, fatigue, and fainting are possible. Beta-blockers also affect the respiratory system, so other side effects include shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and chest pain. Beta-blockers should not be withdrawn suddenly, as that could result in a heart attack or sudden death.

ACE inhibitors

The most common side effect from ACE Inhibitors is also an unusual one -- a dry cough. Usually it goes away with continued use of the drug, but that could take weeks. ACE Inhibitors could reduce blood pressure too much, resulting in hypotension which could, in turn lead to headache, dizziness, fainting, and reduced kidney function.

Angiotensin II receptor blockers

The most common side effect from the angiotensin receptor blockers(ARBs) is an increased potassium level in the blood, known ashyperkalemia. Dizziness is also common, along with fatigue. Upper respiratory tract infections have also been reported -- along with gastrointestinal issues such as upset stomach and diarrhea.

Calcium channel blockers

Up to a third of patients may experience the following side effects with calcium channel blockers: Swelling of the ankles and other extremities, flushing, and dizziness. Other common side effects include heartburn and nausea.

Alpha blockers

A common, transient, but distressing initial side effect of the alpha blockers is postural hypotension. This is a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing up. It can be severe enough to cause dizziness or even fainting. In addition, the alpha blockers can result in increased heart rate, headache, nausea, and weakness.

Methyldopa

Methyldopa is mostly well tolerated, but some patients may experience dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, headache, and dry mouth.

Central agonists

Up to 40% of patients taking clonidine (Catapres) will experience dry mouth and about a third will have drowsiness, headache, and sleepiness. Other common side effects include constipation, dizziness, and local skin reactions with use of the Catapres-TTS skin patch. Reserpine use is linked with possible side effects including nightmares, stuffy nose, depression, and an inability to fall asleep. Diarrhea and heartburn are also possible. Guanadrel and guanethidine can cause diarrhea and other gastrointestinal issues – as well as dizziness and drowsiness.

Vasodilators

Taking minoxidil might result in excessive body hair growth, as well as weight gain and dizziness. Hydralazine is linked to headaches, heartpalpitations, swelling around the eyes, and aches and pains in the joints.

PROTECTION and PREVENTION:
Do protect your kidney and liver if you or your loved ones are taking medications for the high blood pressure condition.

It will never be too late to protect these organs before they are damaged day by day by the chemical substances in the medicine.

Her morning breakfast - Soy Milk

Nutrifresh as her breakfast

Why did I introduce Nutrifresh? To give her a plant-based soy bean milk in hope to replace her formula milk which has many synthetic vitamin fortification.

Why i choose soy milk rather than cow's milk?

Ingredients:

Soya bean + grape + banana + pineapple + asparagus + barley + broccoli + cabbage + cantaloupe + carrot + citrus peel + honeydew + peas + pear + peach + grapefruit + lemon + rice powder

(No artificial coloring and preservative)

Suitable for growing children from 6 months onwards.

I am glad she is GOOD with the taste!  :D

Some parents may have concern of introducing many plant ingredients at one time. To me, i find it's okay to continue introducing as long as after first attempt she is not developing any allergies towards it.

Furthermore, I have read that the latest AAAAI has come up with this recommendation on introducing allergen to infants:

This past January, however, the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology (AAAAI) released a new set of recommendations on infant feeding practices to help prevent food allergy. The recommendations are based on the available observational research to date, and are the first guidelines to state that delaying introduction of foods like wheat, cow's milk dairy, eggs, fish and nuts may actually result in an increased risk of food allergy or eczema. - See more at: http://healthywholesomefood.blogspot.sg/2014/04/parents-must-read-how-and-why-to.html

Nutrifresh has been a very convenient source for me to prepare her for soy milk now! ;)

Why I choose Nutritional Immunology for myself and family?

If you were with me that year in 2007, you will be seeing me as a very hardworking employee, readily to do overtime whenever needed.

Right after graduation from NUS in chemical engineering, I stepped into working world and worked as a chemical engineer in first top engineering firm in Singapore.

Due to long hours of working and stress and improper diet, I became falling sick very often.

Almost every month I had to take MC after getting flu, cold or fever

I didn't realise the severe impact on my job performance until my BIG boss asked me to his room and started questioning on my MC record. Basically i have taken 20 days of MC in my first year of working.

I started to seek for alternative way to improve my health, but my condition didn't get better.

While I was looking for better alternative, my colleague shared with me on Nutritional Immunology.

I was amazed by her sharing with the fact that immune system is the BEST DOCTOR in the world and what it needs is nutrition from wholesome plant food source, not from medicine and vitamin pills.

Taking antibiotics will make body to have superbug as the bacteria will be immune to the medicine.

I started taking Nutritional Immunology wholesome food products such as Symphony of Excellence, Oxyginberry Beverage, Nutrifresh, Evernew and so on.

To my amazement, I was not falling sick for a couple of months continuously. This is a HUGE improvement on my health.

I was thankful that my colleague shared it with me and my health condition improved tremendously. Otherwise, I could have still suffering from frequent cold and fever helplessly.

medicine and vitamin supplements

Will medicine give side effects?

MEDICINE:
Source: FDA website:
http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/ResourcesForYou/Consumers/ucm196029.htm

How can I find out about side effects or safety concerns for my drug?
To learn about side effects or safety concerns for your drug, read either the drug label or the drug's package insert. You may also want to speak with your pharmacist or healthcare provider.
Another way to learn about your drug’s side effects or safety concerns is to use the Index to Drug-Specific Information.
Do drugs have risks?
All medicines have benefits and risks. The risks of medicines are the chances that something unwanted or unexpected could happen to you when you use them. Risks could be less serious things, such as an upset stomach, or more serious things, such as liver damage. FDA approves a drug for marketing after determining that the drug's benefits outweigh its risks.
How do I report a suspected drug side effect?
Use MedWatch, the FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program, to report a suspected drug side effect.

VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS:

What is the best and safest food preservation method? What is Freeze-Drying?

FREEZE-DRYING - the best and safest food preservation for consumers

After learning more about freeze-drying, only I came to know there are so many benefits of freeze-dried food. I appreciate all the manufacturers in providing freeze-dried food for people.

Freeze drying is a relatively recent method of preserving food. It involves freezing the food, then removing almost all the moisture in a vacuum chamber, and finally sealing the food in an airtight container.

Freeze dried foods can be easily transported at normal temperatures, stored for a long period of time, and consumed with a minimum of preparation. Once prepared, freeze-dried foods have much the same look and taste as the original, natural products.

The freeze-drying process was developed during World War II as a method of preserving blood plasma for battlefield emergencies without requiring refrigeration or damaging the organic nature of the plasma.

The technology was applied to consumer food products after the end of the war. Coffee was one of the first freeze-dried products to be marketed on a large scale. Today, many fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, and food flavorings are freeze-dried.

Freeze-drying has several advantages over other food preservation methods.

  1. Frozen foods retain flesh flavor and nutritional values, BUT require uniform, low temperature storage.
  2. Dehydrated and canned foods are shelf-stable, BUT high-temperature processing can degrade flavour, texture and nutritional content.
  3. Freeze-drying combines the best of these processing methods. It preserves the WHOLESOMENESS, FRESHNESS, COLOR and AROMA similar to frozen food, while providing the shelf-stable convenience of canned or dehydrated food.
  • Taste fresh. Freeze-driein virtually all their fresh-food taste and nutritional content. Freeze-drying removes the water, not the taste and flavour.
  • Look fresh. Freeze-dried foods maintain their WHOLESOMENESS, original shape, colour and texture, unlike dehydrated foods, which shrink and shrivel due to high-temperature processing. Freeze-drying removes water under low temperatures (typically a maximum of 100 to 130 degrees F), which keeps intact the moisture channels and food fibers. Just add water, and in minutes every fresh food detail returns.
  • Safer. Freeze-dried food is also relatively contamination-free since the dehydration process makes it virtually impossible for yeast and potentially harmful bacteria to survive.
  • Weigh less than fresh. Freeze-dried foods have 98% of their water removed. This reduces the food's weight by about 90%.
  • Stay fresh. Freeze-dried foods can be stored at room temperature, without deterioration or spoilage. This is because freeze-drying and packaging remove both water and oxygen - the two primary causes of food deterioration.

For more details about freeze-drying, refer below:
So, Why E.Excel food products are wholesome plant foods products - although appear in sachet forms?

Because they are FREEZE-DRIED food, hence can be kept longer without adding any preservatives and yet the wholesomeness, and nutritional values are maintained as that in original plant foods.

I value wholesome food personally, with freeze-dried food, it has further added value of convenience to me in getting healthy wholesome food.

Vitamin Pills and Calcium Pills may shorten lifespan

According to UK media reports on 28 Feb, the study published in the journal of the American Association showed that 3 types of the vitamin supplements, Vitamin A, E and Beta Carotene could increase the risk of early death.

Long term consumption of Vitamin C pills may up the risks of oxalate-type kidney stone formation.

A study by US Harvard University researchers revealed that adding Vitamin A to low-fat milk is not beneficial to health as Vitamin A may lead to osteoporosis, 50% increase in the risks of bone fracture.

Researchers from Denmark's University of Copenhagen recently discovered that taking
  • Beta carotene supplement produced approximate 7% increased risk of death
  • Vitamin E pills 4% increased risk of death
  • Vitamin A pills  16% increased risk of death.

More info about side effects of vitamin pills:

Calcium Pills Raise Heart Attack Risk by 30%

The above happens mainly because all the above supplements are synthetically made!!

If we are taking the nutrients from wholesome plant food source, they won't give the above side effects even though we take more than our body requires.

Parent Must Read: Shall my kid's tonsils get removed if keep having inflammation?

To all Parents, I think it's important to read the below about tonsils.

Source: http://www.courierpress.com/news/2011/jun/20/long-term-risks-may-outweigh-advantages-of/?print=1

************************
Tonsils. Oh, how we may come to miss them.
For much of the baby boomer set, losing them was a rite of childhood, with tonsils nipped out at the rate of a million or so procedures a year.

The trade-off for a few miserable days in the hospital and the unrequited promise of unlimited post-operative ice cream (we were usually too nauseous to eat much) was supposed to be fewer sore throats and ear aches, trips to the doctor and missed days of school.

These days, ear, nose and throat specialists perform about half as many tonsillectomies as they did in the 1950s and '60s to correct a broader range of problems in both children and adults, from sleep apnea to a rare type of kidney infection.

Various studies and reviews over the past few decades have collectively concluded that while the procedure may help certain individuals, most of its advantages, as far as infections go, seem to last only a couple of years.

Medical societies ranging from the Infectious Disease Society of America to the American Academy of Pediatrics have either concluded that removing tonsils, with or without the adenoids, does little or no good for things such as middle ear infections or should be considered only for extreme and frequent strep throat infections that can't be otherwise medicated.

More recently, the other tonsil shoe has been dropping in research that suggests some negative long-term side effects from losing the little organelles.

First, reports published in 2009 and again this year note that children who have their tonsils out, with or without adenoid removal, are at increased risk for obesity.

The researchers in both studies speculate that kids freed from the constant assault of sore throats may simply be more inclined to eat, or that frequent illness actually may impede growth and that children go into a growth spurt after the surgery. They also note that parents may tend to overfeed children who suddenly no longer are picky eaters.

Earlier this year, Swedish researchers reported that having tonsils or the appendix removed before age 20 slightly increased patients' risk for suffering a heart attack at a young age — by 44 percent for the tonsils and 33 percent for the appendix.

There was no apparent similar effect for losing the organs after that age, however.
The researchers, from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, note that both organs are part of the lymphoid system that supports the body's immune response.

They speculate that removing the organs may affect the immune system over the long term in a way that increases inflammatory damage to the heart and major arteries. But because the organs seem to have reduced function after adolescence, the study was limited to those who had surgery before age 20.

"Given the strong biological and epidemiological evidence linking inflammation with coronary heart disease, one might anticipate that surgical removal of the tonsils and appendix, with the consequent effects on immunity, might also have a long-term effect on heart disease," said Dr. Imre Janzsky, lead investigator, in a statement about the European Heart Journal report.

He also noted that because the study only looked at Swedes born between 1955 and 1970, the total number of heart attacks was small — only about 400 out of 7.5 million studied, but with a clear tilt toward those who had had appendectomies or tonsillectomies versus a control group.

Janzsky said it's likely that looking at people older than their 50s would show a similar or greater risk of heart disease from having had tonsils or appendix removed.
