Is Traditional Chinese Medicine a Safer Alternative?

Researchers have uncovered widespread evidence of a link between traditional Chinese herbal remedies and liver cancer across Asia, a study said on Wednesday (Oct 18).

The findings suggest stronger measures are needed to prevent people from consuming chemicals called aristolochic acids (AA), which are derived from the woody vines of the aristolochia plant family, said the report in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

The acids can be found in some traditional Chinese medicines that are given during childbirth, to prevent parasites and promote healing.

While many of people would prefer TCM than Western Medicine, nevertheless, we still need to take note on the safety concern of TCM. 

Natural and Herbal make a product sound safe, however, there are always exceptions. 

There are 3 categories of Natural Plants: 


1. Toxic Plant 


Unsafe natural plant, eg. Tobacco leaves Coca Leave (the source of cocaine), hemp (the source of marijuana), and opium poppy (the source of heroin and morphine) 

2. Medicine Plants (Herbs) 


Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Can bring harm when formulated and used wrongly. These cannot be consumed by everyone (such as children or pregnant ladies) or for long term. 

Some pill makers are not professionally qualified to use herbs or plants in formulating these medicines. Other manufacturers, tempted by plump profits tend to disregard consumer safety. 

For example: Ephedra (Ma Huang), Guarana Seed, Guar Gum, White Willow Bark

3. Plant Foods / Food Herbs 


eg. Fruits and Vegetables which are safe to consume by everyone on daily basis. 


As a WISE CONSUMER, always choose the 3rd Category - Plant Foods/ Food Herbs to nourish your body.

Is Organic Food Really Free from Pesticides?

Organic food has become popular among many health conscious people especially parents of young children as they believe the organic food is free of harmful pesticides. 

However, is organic food really free from pesticides?




According to the above news article,  we can learn that there are many 'organic pesticides' which are harmful to humans found in organic harvest!! 


What is organic definition?


The word "organic" refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat. Organic farming practices are designed to meet the following goals:
  • Enhance soil and water quality
  • Reduce pollution
  • Provide safe, healthy livestock habitats
  • Enable natural livestock behavior
  • Promote a self-sustaining cycle of resources on a farm
Materials or practices not permitted in organic farming include:
  • Synthetic fertilizers to add nutrients to the soil
  • Sewage sludge as fertilizer
  • Most synthetic pesticides for pest control
  • Irradiation to preserve food or to eliminate disease or pests
  • Genetic engineering, used to improve disease or pest resistance or to improve crop yields
  • Antibiotics or growth hormones for livestock
Organic crop farming materials or practices may include:
  • Plant waste left on fields (green manure), livestock manure or compost to improve soil quality
  • Plant rotation to preserve soil quality and to interrupt cycles of pests or disease
  • Cover crops that prevent erosion when parcels of land are not in use and to plow into soil for improving soil quality
  • Mulch to control weeds
  • Predatory insects or insect traps to control pests
  • Certain natural pesticides and a few synthetic pesticides approved for organic farming, used rarely and only as a last resort in coordination with a USDA organic certifying agent
Therefore, it's not surprising that you can still find traces of pesticides (being organic/ synthetic) in the organic harvest! 

So, to me, especially with Chemical Engineering background, the strongest evidence of ORGANIC are through pesticide testings. 

As this is the ONLY way to prove that the harvest is really free from pesticides.

Is Fatty Liver Disease a Concern to you? How to Prevent Fatty Liver???

I attended Live With Dr Chen's talk (Chapter 2) at Resorts World Sentosa on 21st May. 

It was a very educational and I get to further enhance my Nutritional Immunology Knowledge to be able to serve better too =)

One of my great learnings was on Fatty Liver Disease!!



***Even a 5 year old suffered from Fatty Liver Disease due to Nutrition Misconception. 

People of higher risk to get Fatty Liver Disease are : 

Alcohol drinker
Obese due to unhealthy diet and lifestyle
People who use synthetic vitamins mineral pills (chemically made food), such as Vitamin A, E and iron pills

(as the above add burden and damaging the liver) 

Do you know also : 

• Drinking Kombucha,
Taking herbal medication  (such as 何首乌, 田七, etc etc)
• Using Pain killers (especially paracetamol)

are hurting and damaging your liver and lead to Fatty Liver Disease too? 

Fatty Liver Disease has  NO medicine to cure!!

Most of the time, it stay hidden in the body until symptoms such as

  • Jaundice
  • body turns yellow
  • Swollen Liver
  • Painful feeling on liver 

surface only the person discovered about their liver is deteriorating!!!!!!!

As liver has no sensory gland, so when this happens, the liver might already be hardened follows by liver cancer. 

(Many of the Normal Liver Testings may not indicate the accurate condition of your liver condition) 



***Once the liver reach Cirrhosis (Liver Hardening), it's irreversible. 


How do you take care of your liver when it's still healthy?

What are the Pitfalls of Vegetarian Food?

Recently, I'm more prone into taking "Vegetarian" Diet such as:
  • Salads
  • Yong Tao Fu with all vegetables (no fish balls and meats)
  • Vegetable U-Mian
  • Mixed rice from vegetarian stalls
  • Normal Mixed rice (with vegetables and no animal meats)


Having a few weeks adopting this 'vegetarian' food diet, i realised that it indeed takes a commitment for a person to stop taking animal meats.

It's known that vegetarian diet have many of the benefits to health!

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 
appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. 

According to a large-scale study conducted over a 6 year period and published in JAMA Internal Medicine, a journal of American Medical Association, 

the study shows that Vegetarians lives longer than meat eaters.
vegetarians had a 12% lower death rate than their meat-eating counterparts. 
Vegetarians also had a 19% lower chance of dying from heart disease than meat eater, and lower risk of dying from diabetes and kidney failure. 


Nevertheless, I realised that vegetarian diets sometimes may NOT be as healthy as we think if the below are our frequent selections:

1. Vegetarian diet comes with processed foods, example mocked meats, which may contain chemical additives and preservatives that are bad for health.

2. Certain vegetarian foods are often deep-fried.
Deep fried usually gives higher calories which may lead to obesity.
For example, in 100 g of fried tofu, it contains 271 calories.
100 g of fried dough fritter is having 558 calories.

Besides, the excess oil and fat are bad for cardiovascular health as the oils are high in Omega 6 which can cause body inflammation and leads to various chronic diseases.

3. Some vegetarian food is prepared using high-heat stir frying or deep frying. This cooking method may destroy the phytochemicals and antioxidants of the plant foods and significantly reduce its nutritional values.

4. Furthermore, vegetarians may be only taking one kind of mushroom (shitake) and rely on it to get polysaccharides nutrients.

It's actually more beneficial to consume different types of mushrooms to get different unique types of polysaccharides for different protection functions.
