Be A Wise Consumer - in household and skin care items

Indeed it's important to be aware of the safety of skin care products in the market.

Always learn to read the labels and be more cautious about the harmful chemicals used in the PDTs.

A few harmful chemicals which we need to take note.

Check out if our daily use PDTs contains any of the below.

If yes, better discard.

For example some tooth pastes contain Triclosan which could cause depression, liver disorder or even cancer when it's mixed with water.

Refer below for more info:

My weight management experience after delivery (Post Pregnancy)

Finally did  my photo comparisons and shared with friends on the Facebook.

During my last trimester of pregnancy, my weight shoot up to as high as 62 kg.

Although still have another 3 more kg to shed off, I am happy with the results as of now. =) Considered able to slim down quite a lot in quite short time. =)

Hmm...Actually, I am quite confident that with the knowledge that I learned about healthy weight management, I can achieve my healthy weight loss. =)

It's very simple. A few rules of thumbs on weight management, but let me see how many I have followed:

1. Watch out calorie intake, avoid oily and fried foods
My confinement food was quite oily (high calorie). After confinement, I have been eating normal meals. Just that I was conscious to avoid oily and fried foods, tried to take more vegetables.

2. Adequate Protein to Maintain muscle to burn more calories
Yes - have soy intake - a plant based protein from 1-Shape

3. Fiber intake to increase satiety and prevent absorption of oil in the intestine
Yes - have grain fiber intake from 1-Shape

4. Increase metabolism
Yes - have American Ginseng to increase my metabolism and vitality from 1-Shape

5. Exercise
No, but walked quite a lot after my confinement as attended many activities and events. Also, guess taking care of baby and breastfeeding does help.

6. Sufficient Collagen to help firm up my body and skin after losing weight
Yes - not from animal collagen, but from plant source to allow body self produce collagen - from Oxyginberry Beverage

Found this article on newspaper. The skin of this man in London became sagging after losing weight of 83 kg. So I can see that collagen is important in maintaining skin elasticity and muscle toning during weight loss.

Chemicals in the Baby Wipes

It's so disheartening to read this article. My girl had a bad rash earlier. We suspected it's the baby wipes that caused her buttocks to turn very red and she kept crying and crying when we changed to another baby wipes of different brand. Ever since that incident, we don't use baby wipes anymore. We use tap water to cleanse her buttocks.

The horrific damage BABY WIPES can do to children's skin: Chemical in the wipes can cause an itchy red rash

  • Methylisothiazolinon (MI), a preservative, can cause allergic reactions
  • Researchers suggest parents only use baby wipes when they are travelling
  • They say that at home it is safer to use paper towels with water
  • MI has been blamed for a massive rise in dangerous allergic reactions caused by a huge range of beauty products

Baby wipes make some children come out in painful, red rashes, new research suggests.
A chemical preservative called methylisothiazolinone (MI) in the wipes causes an allergic reaction in some children, researchers found.
The chemical has been blamed for a massive rise in dangerous allergic reactions caused by a huge range of beauty products.
Until now, no cases of allergic reactions to wet wipes had been reported in the U.S., but the study authors think this could be due to the reactions being misdiagnosed as other conditions, such as eczema.

‘I think it may be more common than people realise,’ Dr Mary Wu Chang, an associate professor of dermatology and paediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, told NBC News.
Scientists at the school of medicine studied six children with severe rashes.
The first child was a girl who had a rash on her face and her buttocks.
The eight-year-old had already been treated with antibiotics and steroids but after each treatment, the rash reappeared.
The scientists suspected that she might be suffering from an allergic reaction so asked her mother what she used to clean her.
The girl’s mother explained that she used wet wipes to clean her daughter’s mouth and buttocks.
Dr Chang had recently read a report about a Belgian man who was allergic to the MI in baby wipes.
She tested the child for an allergy and the results were positive.

Unsurprisingly, when the girl’s mother then stopped using baby wipes, her rashes disappeared.
During the following two years, five more children were brought to the medical centre with similar rashes.
In each case, the rash disappeared as soon as the children were no longer cleaned with baby wipes.
Despite the discovery, Dr Chang does not believe parents should stop using baby wipes.
She told NBC News: ‘They’re so convenient. I have three kids, so I know how hard it is to do the changes, especially when you’re travelling.
‘But maybe when you’re at home, it would be better to use a gentle cleanser and water. That way you minimise exposure.’
Dr Robin Gehris, from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre, says the number of children suffering from these reactions is increasing.
She believes this could be because the amount of MI in baby wipes has been increased.
As a result, she also suggests parents avoid using them except when they are travelling.
She says that at home it is better to use wet paper towels.
Baby wipes are not the only product to contain MI.
Cosmetic giant Johnson & Johnson says it is so concerned, it is taking the chemical out of its best-selling Piz Buin sun cream and other products.
Molton Brown is doing the same and big brands such as Nivea, L’Oreal, Clarins and Sanctuary are under pressure to take action as doctors say adverse reactions to the chemical have reached ‘epidemic proportions’.
Skin experts say manufacturers should urgently remove the chemical from products that are left on the skin. It can cause rashes, lumps, blisters, itchy eyes and facial swelling.
In one case, a woman’s head and face swelled up so much that doctors feared she would have trouble breathing without urgent treatment.
In another, a British holidaymaker’s skin became so inflamed that she spent two days in a Spanish hospital and needed steroids and antihistamines to calm the allergic reaction.
MI is a preservative designed to extend shelf life, and has no useful properties for users of the products.
Experts say the scale of the allergic reactions to the chemical, which has been used increasingly since 2005, is alarming.
Dermatologists expect an allergic reaction to a cosmetic product of one or two per cent, but clinics say the rate for MI has been more than 10 per cent.
Leading dermatologist Dr Ian White, from St Thomas’ Hospital in London, said: ‘The frequency of reactions to MI is unprecedented in my experience.
'We’ve never seen anything quite like it. Contact allergy to this permitted preservative is now of epidemic proportions. Immediate action needs to be taken by industry.’

In fact, many products contain chemicals that have not been fully tested for safety. Scientists do not know the effects of long term exposure to many of these chemicals on the human body.

We usually think that the safety of the things that we apply on our skin may not be as important as that of the food we eat. This is not true. In fact, we should take more note on what we apply on our skin. Why?
The food we eat goes through the stomach in which gastric acids help to kill the germ. However, the substances we breath in or absorbed thru the skin GO DIRECTLY into the BLOODSTREAM. The thinner the skin, the less effective it is at keeping out substances that cause irritation. Elderly people and young children have thinner and more sensitive skin. Substances of molecular weight of 400 and below penetrate more easily into skin and could have serious effects if harmful.

Many toxic chemicals accumulate in human fat tissue. Residual toxins present in the mother are passed to the child in her milk during breastfeeding. The fact that small children lack detoxification enzymes in the liver makes this even worse.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) released the results of a two-year study that found up to 232 different industrial chemicals in the cord blood of 10 babies who were exposed to the substance while still in the womb.

This study tested for chemicals found in nearly every American household. The findings represented the first reported detections in American newborns for 21 contaminants. Among them are Bisphenol A (BPA), Tetrabromobisphenol A(TBBPA), Perflurobutanoic acid (PFBA, or C4) which are linked to cancer, birth defects, infertility and so on.

Just to share, I choose to use E.Excel Elemente baby series for my baby as I know the products have gone thru the toxicity tests under MSDS test requirements. So far it has been good for my 2 month old baby. :)

The Goals of Nutritional Immunology

Nutritional Immunology focuses not only on prolonging life but improving the quality of life. It aims to help people make better-informed choices about nutrition and their lifestyle. Many people fall ill because they lack knowledge about nutrition. Many more don't know that nature provides all the nourishment we need for a healthy immune system. All  we need to do is to make the simple decision to eat healthier to improve and prolong our lives.

According to Nutritional Immunology, what we eat directly affects how our immune system works. Good nutrition gives us an amazing disease-fighting capability while poor nutrition makes us fall ill easily and take a longer time to recover. Nutritional Immunology emphasizes prevention over cure and longevity over more good health.

Unlike the days when poverty and starvation were rampant, many of us have access to sufficient sources of basic nutrition like protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.

Nutritional Immunology goes a step beyond these basic survival nutrients to research disease-fighting nutrients like antioxidants, phytochemicals and polysaccharides.

Experts on Nutritional Immunology study plant foods, which contain the most abundance of antioxidants, phytochemicals and polysaccharides. They also study the proper quantity of such plants that is need for excellent health. For example, studies show that we need a minimum of 15 different plant foods daily to obtain an optimum amount of phytochemicals.

Experts also emphasize consuming natural nutrients sources from whole plant foods and not chemically created ones. By encouraging us to consume more plant foods, Nutritional Immunology tackles the prevention of modern day chronic and degenerative illnesses by enhancing the health of the immune system.  When we succumb to chronic illnesses, we age faster. By preventing these illnesses, Nutritional Immunology helps us to strive for longevity.

Apart from researching types of immune-enhancing plant foods, Nutritional Immunology also focuses on the age, specie, part, cultivation, harvesting methods and processing techniques of these plant foods in order to derive maximum benefits.

Selecting species/ herbs:
For example, over 80 specie of ginger are available, but all contain different combinations of nutrients.

Some plants, like ginseng and ginseng berry, contain different nutrients in the root as compared to the fruits.

Orange and lemons have been traditional sources of the antioxidant, Vitamin C. But rose hips, the small fruits of roses, contain up to 50 times the amount of Vitamin C found in lemons.

Proanthocyanidin (OPC) found mainly in grape seeds, has 20 times more potent than Vitamin C and up to 50 times more potent than another antioxidant, Vitamin E.

Similarly, soy is perhaps one of the best sources of phytochemicals known to mankind. Isoflavones, a soy phytochemical is used to relieve menopause symptoms in women in place of risker chemical alternatives like hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Mushromms are also being recognized for their astounding nutritional capabilities. Polysaccharides from Agaricus Blazel Murill (ABM), Shitake, Maitake, Ganoderman and Coriolus Versicolor mushrooms are particularly flavored for their ability to inhibit tumors and even enhance treatment procedures for existing cancer sufferers. However, Amanita mushrooms can kill when eaten.

Within the same Opuntia cactus family, there are some whose fruits are edible and others like Opuntia Compressa, whose fruits cannot be eaten.

Some plants are natural BUT are NOT safe. For example:
  • Ephedra (Ma Huang) - its active ingredient ephedrine, a popular ingredient in slimming pills can cause heart attacks, blood toxicity and bleeding strokes. The FDA has also collected over 150 ephedra-linked death reports.

  • Guar Gum - a weight-loss ingredient was banned in the 1990s. Guar gum is a complex sugar that swells when wet, creating a feeling of fullness when eaten. However, its side effects include frightening instances of stomach,  throat and intestinal blockage.

  • White Willow Bark - contains salicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin. The FDA says that this herb is sometimes used in child medications that are labeled aspirin-free. It can induce internal bleeding in aspirin-sensitive adults. The National Council Against Health Fraud cautions that using it for childhood chicken pox or influenza can lead to Reye's syndrome, a disease which affects all organs of the body, but most lethally the liver and the brain.

  • Guarana Seeds, Cola nut, Camellia leaf - high-caffeine herbs are popular weight-loss agents because caffeine reportedly boosts metabolism. Depending on the species, guarana yields up to 10% caffeine by weight. Camellia leaf carries about 3.5% and the average caffeine content of raw coffee is about 2.2% by weight. Experts concur that too much caffeine can cause anxiety. insomnia, irregular heartbeat, addictiveness and even death in those with high blood pressure. Some of these herbs are used in combination with diuretic herbs in slimming supplements to make the body lose large amount of water, leading to temporary weight loss. Overuse of diuretics also increases the risk of kidney damage.

Harvesting Time:
Ginseng and cactus need to be grown for many years before harvesting while mushrooms are more nutritious when harvested early.

Processing for Quality and Quantity:
Certain phytochemicals may be found in the whole plant but not in its extract or juice. Similarly some plants can be heated to extract nutrients while others cannot. For example, soy needs heat during processing while heat may destroy nutrients in more fragile plants. Overheating cactus for instance, discolor the surface and reduces nutrient content. Heat can also degrade a food's fiber content.

While manufactures should be careful to thoroughly clean harvested plants, force should be avoided. Ginseng roots for instance should not be scrubbed vigorously as this removes valuable nutrients. Rapid drying after cleaning will also discolor fragile ginseng berries as each berry yields only a few drops of essence.

Cactus are among the most difficult plant foods to process. Their thorny exterior forms an imposing barrier to the highly nutritious getl within. A detailed regiment of extraction and filtration is need to remove the various tiny particles. thorns and impurities before the gel is fit for use.

Another plant food that must be carefully processed is bee pollen. Bee pollen consists of an edible and water-soluble interior and a hard, inedible exterior or shell. Commercial bee pollen sometimes contains the shell - endangering the digestive system and making it difficult for the body to absorb the nutrients.

The Knowledge Factor

There is a difference between good herbal products and excellent ones. It is not difficult to produce herbal products that have a good amount of nutrients. But it is extremely challenging to select the best herbs and plant foods and deliver them to consumers in the purest, freshest and most nutritious form.

It is knowledge that separates the two. Nature requires our respect and understanding. Only by being careful and aware can we expect to obtain the optimal power of an herb or plant food.

Thanks to Nutritional Immunology, we now can have that knowledge. And become it is a constantly developing science, we can rest assured that research is going to reveal even more astounding, disease-fighting properties in plant foods. Thus far at least, Nutritional Immunology is already giving us the most precious knowledge at all - how to prolong the length and quality of our lives through Nature's healthiest herbs!

How to Prevent Diabetes?

DIABETES

Diabetes is a complex, serious, costly and increasingly common disease.

"In Singapore, one out of 9 people aged 18 to 69 has diabetes. That’s about 11.3% of our population or more than 400,000 people!
Diabetes is the fifth most common medical condition diagnosed and one of the six top killer diseases in the country.
Diabetes is a chronic disease and, if not managed well, can deteriorate steadily to cause devastating complications such as blindness, nerve damage, kidney failure, heart disease and limb amputation. Studies show that about half of patients already have diabetes-related complications at the time of diagnosis."
The above statistic's reference: http://www.diabetes.org.sg/

To understand the complexity of diabetes, we must first learn how the body processes food.

Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose (sugar) that the body uses for energy.

  • The pancreas, an organ which lies near the stomach, produces a hormone called insulin.

  • Operating much like a key, insulin opens up each individual cell's door, letting in glucose.  After the cells receive this sugar, energy is produced.
  • Diabetes is a condition where the body makes little or no insulin, or does not properly use the insulin it does produce.
  • Thus, when the sugars are unable to enter the cells, they begin to build up in the blood becoming very harmful to the body.

Diabetes can adversely affect nearly every organ system.

Complications of diabetes include heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease, nervous system disease, amputation, dental disease and difficulties with pregnancy.

And people with diabetes are more susceptible to many other illnesses - studies have found that diabetics are more likely to die of pneumonia or influenza tha people who do not have this disease.

There are 3 types of diabetes:

1) Gestational Diabetes - is a form of glucose intolerance that is diagnosed in some pregnant women: the cause is unknown.

  • During pregnancy, some forms of treatment are required to normalize maternal blood glucose level to avoid complications with the infant.
  • Immediately following pregnancy, 5-10% of women with gestational diabetes are found to develop type 2 diabetes.
  • Women with gestational diabetes who do not develop type 2 diabetes immediately after delivery have a 20-50% chance of developing type 2 diabetes during the following 5-10 years.

2) Type 1 Diabetes accounts for about 5% of all diagnosed causes of diabetes.

  • It's a form of auto immune disease, usually strikes children and young adults.
  • Causes are complex, cells within the pancreas are destroyed and eventually insulin is no longer produced.
  • The patients need to take insulin injection a day to survive.

3) Type 2 Diabetes the most common form, accounting for about 90-95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes.

Causes are due to:
1. Overweight
2. Older Age
3. Family-history of diabetes
4. prior history of gestational diabetes (during pregnancy)
5. Impaired glucose intolerance
6. Physical inactivity
7. Race/ ethnicity

How to Prevent Diabetes

While people diabetes can take insulin to keep blood glucose levels close to the normal, preventing or delaying the development of diabetes in the first place is EVEN BETTER.

There are some precautions that can be taken to lower the risk of developing diabetes.

1. Following a nutritious diet - must learn how specific foods affect their blood sugar level and what foods they should avoid in order to achieve a healthy balance.

Should diabetics just avoid foods that taste sweet?

The answer is NO. The sweetness is not a good indication of its sugar content. Even bland foods break down into sugars once they are digested.

There are several types of sugars, including sucrose (cane sugar or table sugar), lactose (found in dairy products), glucose and fructose (occurring naturally in sweet fruits and honey) and maltose (malt sugar). Most of the food we eat is converted to glucose to provide the body with energy.

Diabetics should compare the Glycemic Index (GI) of food to know which foods are beneficial for them.

GI is the rate at which sugar levels increase in the blood.

For eg. glucose has a GI of 100 because when we eat glucose, it raises our blood sugar level right away.

Most foods eventually turn into glucose. But if eat rice or bread for instance, it takes longer for the body's system to turn into sugar and thus raise the blood sugar level.

The lower the GI, the more ideal the food is as a source of nutrition for diabetics.

Below is a list of foods and their GI as a useful reference for diabetics when selecting the appropriate foods.

You can also refer to the below for GI of some Chinese Food:

The glycemic index of Chinese food chart1

2. Consistent exercise program and losing excessive weight.

According to the Diabetes Prevention Program which studied 3234 people who were at high risk for diabetes and have participated in a moderate diet and exercise program, the results were a 5-7% weight loss which delayed or prevented type 2 diabetes by 58%.
